The Importance and The Power of Prayer

Oct 27, 2024
Praying for Leaders and for Workers in the Harvest
It's hard to imagine America being more split on politics than the present time. Unfortunately, many Christians display from their actions that they are more concerned about the kingdoms of this world than the Kingdom of God. Chris preaches on how God's word calls us to lift up all people, including all those in authority (regardless of political stances). Ultimately, God desires that all would be saved and that we would participate in the harvest.

Be Aware of Obstacles to a Successful Prayer Life
Some preachers say that God doesn't care about how you approach Him in prayer, you just need to regularly pray to him. Yet, scripture tells a different story. Chris preaches on roadblocks that keep your prayers from being heard by the Almighty God.

Prayer: From the Beginning of Jesus’ ministry to His Heavenly Throne
When you choose to follow Christ, you don't have to look further than your Lord and Savior for the prime example of how important prayer is. Chris preaches on how Jesus' ministry was filled with prayer from the beginning even to His present location on the heavenly throne at the right hand of the Father.

    Modeling the Model Prayer
Unfortunately, many Bibles label this passage in Matthew 6 as "The Lord's Prayer", when it would be better titled "The Model Prayer". After all, Jesus doesn't need to ask for forgiveness! (Note: for "The Lord's Prayer", see John 17). Chris preaches on Matthew 6 and how the model prayer displays the right focus vs. our often self-focused prayers as well as the danger of thinking you’re forgiven when you refuse to forgive others.

Prayer as an Offensive and Defensive Weapon in Spiritual Warfare
Preachers and teachers have given much time to the Ephesians 6 passage concerning the armor of God, but many forget to focus on the powerful defensive and offensive weapon that Paul (not to mention Jesus as well as the other apostles!) also teach about; prayer. Chris preaches on several aspects of how prayer can be used both offensively and defensively in spiritual warfare.

The Dividing Wall Has Been Broken By Jesus

[Note: the video of the stage had an error so this only includes the audio and the PowerPoint video] Unfortunately, one of the common teachings among the church today is that there are two concurrent covenants made by God today: One that God has with the Jewish people and one that He made with the church. The New Testament knows nothing of this idea. Chris preaches on Acts 10 which helps show that it was always God's intention that Jesus Christ would break the dividing wall between Jews and Gentiles so that they could become one Body of believers - the Body of Christ.

(Due to a technical problem, the audio is from the video camera) One aspect of the New Testament that is so powerful is how unfaithful Israel is redeemed and fulfilled through Jesus' faithful ministry and the faithful ministry of the Holy Spirit. Chris preaches on how Simon (the son of Jonah) is willing to deliver grace to the Gentiles while the ancient prophet Jonah wanted to keep God's grace from the Gentiles.

He is One of the Greatest Proofs that Christianity is True
Jesus, of course, is the greatest proof of the truth of Christianity. But outside of Christ, who has a transformed life that demonstrates the truth of Christianity more than Saul of Tarsus (commonly known as the Apostle Paul)? Paul was a rising star in Judaism, a Pharisee, and the greatest enemy of the early church. So what did he have to gain to follow Jesus? From a worldly perspective, nothing. From a heavenly perspective, everything! Chris preaches on the first half of Acts 9 and the powerful conversion story of Saul.

Will Persecution Stop You or Embolden You?

In America, our persecution pales in comparison to our brothers and sisters in Christ elsewhere in the world.  Someone may unfriend us on social media, talk harshly to us, or speak ill of us, but being put in jail or put to death is not part of our daily worries for following Jesus.  However, all persecution can be a roadblock to sharing Christ, or it can strengthen your faith when you realize that you're sharing in the suffering of Jesus.  Chris preaches on the last portion of Acts 8 demonstrating how the gospel message expanded with the perseverance of faithful believers as a result of persecution.

One of the things you can be completely certain of is that God will not allow the gospel message to be stomped out.  Every attempt since the beginning of Jesus' resurrection has been utterly overcome by the spreading of the good news.  Chris preaches on Acts 5 as the Sadducees, the ruling priests at the time, try to stomp out the message of the gospel but when the power of God is behind the message - any attempt to stop it will always fail.

In our society, self-promotion is extremely prevalent.  The desire to be honored and accepted frequently outweighs the importance of humility.  Satan uses this as a tool against new and mature believers.  Chris preaches on the tail end of Acts 4 and the beginning of Acts 5 as we see how effective Satan's devices can be and the importance of not giving in to temptation.

We didn't get to choose the family we were born into.  Some had parents who gave them regular attention, love, patience, and balanced discipline.  Others experience harshness, abandonment, or abuse, while still others experience parenting that is somewhere in between.  The good news is that we're all on level ground with our Heavenly Father and we do get to choose whether we're born again into His family.  Chris preaches on the Father's love for all, even those who have rejected His love and the refuge He provides.  After all, it is the goodness of God that leads us to repentance.

What Does it Mean to be Truly Blessed?
In God's word, it is clear that Mary was exceedingly blessed as the one chosen to mother the Son of God.  Yet we have to be careful not to elevate her honor beyond what God calls for.  In fact, in Luke 11:27-28 (NKJV) We find this: 27  And it happened, as He spoke these things, that a certain woman from the crowd raised her voice and said to Him, "Blessed is the womb that bore You, and the breasts which nursed You!"  28  But He said, "More than that, blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it!" So, Jesus indicates the larger blessing is from both hearing and following God's word.  Chris preaches on Luke 1:39-45 and what it means to be truly blessed.

Yet, isn't it interesting that many desire justice for others, but not for themselves?  When it comes to us, we tend to want mercy and grace, not justice.  The beauty of God's character is that when it comes to ultimate justice, God gives us the choice.  Chris preaches on God's justice, mercy, and grace, and preaches about what God prefers to give us.

Our Awesome God is full of Mercy and Grace
When we examine the scriptures we find that God clearly proclaims His character to Moses as He allows Moses to see part of His glory (since all of His glory would have been too much for Moses' human body to handle).  And... the first two characteristics that He proclaims to Moses are that He is full of mercy and grace.  Chris preaches on the incredible mercy and grace from our awesome God and also shares powerful stories of how we can follow the example of our Savior.

The word "Trinity" doesn't even show up until over 100 years after Jesus' resurrection, so why is God to be understood as triune in nature?  Thankfully, not only God's creation, but God's word is filled with examples of God's triune nature.  Chris preaches on this biblical truth and how the 3 Persons of the Godhead are involved in bringing our great salvation.

With all the world religions such as Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Mormonism, etc. - how do we know that Yahweh is the one, true God?  Chris preaches that first, we need to recognize the fact no one has impacted the world more than the life of Jesus... and He proclaimed the one, true God.  Chris preaches on the biblical truth of Yahweh being the one, true God and how obstacles often keep us us from truly worshiping Him.

Our Awesome God is Our Creator
The very first verse in the Bible helps us understand who god is... our Creator.  This is a foundational truth when we recognize that we were created for a purpose. Modern society tells you that you're an result of accidental processes, but with a little investigation, no one should have enough faith to believe that everything we see and those things that we don't are the result of accidental processes.  When we discover how much we are loved and our purpose here, it helps us make a difference for the Kingdom!

A Transformed Life Fights the Good Fight and Finishes the Race
Have you noticed that there have been many prominent Christian teachers, pastors, and musicians who have recently left the faith.  This demonstrates that starting well doesn't mean will finish well unless we are abiding in Jesus regularly.  Paul's final letter, shortly before his execution, demonstrated that he, indeed, did finish the race of serving God well.  Chris preaches on 1 Timothy 4 as the series on the Transformed Life concludes.

On Father's Day, Chris preaches on the second half of 2 Corinthians 6.  The positions of fathers and mothers are divinely appointed roles and have been under significant attack in our culture.  The impact of a father who is present with his family is incredibly positive and the absence or abuse of a father is devastating to the family.  Yet, even in the midst of families with absent or abusive fathers, our Father in Heaven is able to fill those voids and so much more.

A Transformed Life Brings the Power of the Holy Spirit
When your life has been transformed by Jesus Christ, it means you are yielding to the power and direction of the Holy Spirit.  Chris preaches on Acts 19:1-20 as Paul encounters a group in Ephesus who'd heard about the coming Messiah but had never heard about the Holy Spirit.  What does it mean to have the Holy Spirit and how does your life change when you do?  These are important questions that we should understand when we choose to follow Jesus.

A Transformed Life Tries to Reach the Lost from Their Perspective
Our culture has been changing for some time.  It took 60 years for a general intellectual belief in God to reduce from 98% to 92% of those surveyed in America (by Gallup) from 1960 to 2010.  Then, from 2010 to 2020 the percentage dropped nearly double that number.  When we share the good news of Jesus Christ, we have to be mindful of the perspective each individual is coming from and many, these days, do not have much knowledge of Jesus.  With this in mind, Chris preaches on the second half of Acts 17 as Paul speaks to those on Mars Hill.  He uniquely responds to their idolatry to bring them the news of the one, true God.

In the 1st Century AD, there was drastically different view of who was poor than we see through 21st Century American eyes. So, many more of us are much richer than we think! Only by God’s grace and the power of the Holy Spirit does a rich person enter the Kingdom of God.

The Road to the Cross : How Did We Get To This Point
In the fourth message of our Road to the Cross message series, youth pastor Adrian challenges us to examine the events leading to Jesus's ministry. Jesus asked each of the disciples to leave their former lives and follow Him. Each one of them chose to follow Him just as God chose to send Jesus to die on the cross for our sin. Even though Jesus knew what He would endure, He chose to do what the Father asked of Him. Similarly, we have a choice to put God first and love, serve and obey Him not matter what the cost.

Everything we do in life points to what we value. In the second message in the "How to Study the Bible" series, teaching pastor Chris Bender looks at three questions to consider to help us determine what we truly value.  In addition, he looks at Moses and who his life ultimately pointed to.
2/6/2022 Sermon:
Have you ever read an email or text importing your feelings or the kind of day you were having into the message wrongly? Unfortunately, this can also happen when we read the Bible. We can import the kind of day we are having or import our culture wrongly into the Bible and end up distorting what the living Word of God really means.  In our first message in the “How to Study the Bible” series, teaching pastor, Chris Bender, tackles two often misunderstood passages in scripture.  What is found gives glory where glory is due… God!

Have You Left the Far Country and Come Home to the Father?
    Series: Stand Alone

We didn't get to choose the family we were born into.  Some had parents who gave them regular attention, love, patience, and balanced discipline.  Others experience harshness, abandonment, or abuse, while still others experience parenting that is somewhere in between.  The good news is that we're all on level ground with our Heavenly Father and we do get to choose whether we're born again into His family.  Chris preaches on the Father's love for all, even those who have rejected His love and the refuge He provides.  After all, it is the goodness of God that leads us to repentance.

What’s in Christmas : The Good News
In the final message of our What's in Christmas message series, elder Brent looks at a problem that no one likes to address this time of year, but this problem separates us from God, relationships, and good things. The problem is sin. Sin entered the world through one man, Adam. God's solution to our sin was to send His Son, Jesus, to live a perfect life on earth and overcome death. Jesus willingly accepted the mission that God placed before Him. If you are a Christ-follower, God has a mission for you as well, to tell others about the gift God has given to each of us. If you are not a Christ-follower and want to know how to become one, you can call the church office at 815-561-6249 or send an email to questions@lwccr.com.

    What’s in Christmas : Hope
In our Christmas Eve service, elder Brent focuses on the hope that Christmas brings. We tend to place our hope in many things, yet the hope that Christmas brings is the hope that something certain is going to happen that hasn't yet come to pass. When your hope is anchored in Jesus Christ, you have an unmovable hope. May we, as Christ-followers share the hope we have in Jesus with strangers, friends, and family not only at Christmastime but all year long.

    What’s in Christmas : Joy
In this message, elder Brent illuminates that in the busyness of the Christmas season, we often lose focus as we scramble to make this season perfect for those around us. In the made dash to please others we often lose sight of the only thing that can bring us genuine joy, which is Jesus. Joy is not an emotion like happiness. We can not manufacture it in our own power and yet it is the very gift from God that allows us to shine Christ's light, especially when things don't go the way we plan. May God help us to stay focused on Him this Christmas season, so that through our joy we can shine bright for His glory and point other's to Him.

    What’s In Christmas : Planning
In the second message of our What's In Christmas series, elder Brent shares with us the importance of planning and obeying God's calling on our lives. Brent examined Matthew 1:18-25, which was the account of Joseph and Mary's betrothal and Joseph's reaction when he learned his betrothed was pregnant. Joseph was an ordinary man willing to be used by an extraordinary God. Our challenge is to determine how we display Christian character in every aspect of our lives especially when our lives take unplanned turns. Are we willing to obey God like Joseph did, even when we are asked to do incredibly hard things? May God give us the power through His mighty Holy Spirit to obey Him no matter what the cost.
